Did you know a professional tennis player lives here in Arlington?  You may have read about 18 year old Denis Kudla a while back in the Washington Post Magazine article on the Tennis Champions Center in College Park.  The tennis center is an incubator aimed at hatching champions out of young, athletic raw talent.  Looks like its working.  Denis is now on the ATP World Tour with a 611 ranking.

Too bad the ATP doesn’t work like our ACTA ladder… back in May, Denis would have captured a 119 ranking after beating 119th ranked Santiago Ventura in the Newport Hall of Fame Tennis Championships. After his win, Denis succumbed to the newly famous and according to my sister Brad Pitt look alike Ryan Harrison in two close sets.

This local is did great at the US Open Junior Championship.  He won rounds 1, 2 & 3 and a quarter final match to advance to the semi finals for the first time.   His first three matches were nail biting 3 setters where Denis gave up the first set. Denis’ semi final match was less dramatic. He spanked Argentina’s Agustin Velotti in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to reach the finals.

After taking the early set lead in the finals, Denis lost to fellow American Jack Sock, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Not a bad place to finish in this big of a tournament.

Congratulations Denis!
